Together with my consort I represented the Parish Council at Meltham Town Mayor, Cllr Pat Maxfield’s Civic Service. The visiting dignitaries marched behind a band from the Town Hall to St Bartholomew’s Church, Meltham on Sunday 4th September. The service lead by Rev Maureen Read was all about listening, understanding what others are saying and loving each other. After the service the congregation was able to hear the newly restored Carillion bells ring for the first time in 40 years. Following this there was a reception in the Parish Hall.
Later the same afternoon, together with the Mayor and Mayoress of Calderdale and Clergy from St Bartholomew’s Church we welcomed the Rush Cart into the parish. John Cope the leader of the Rushbearing committee presented the welcoming party with rushes. The group then preceded the cart into the village and on to the church where the cart was skilfully brought to a halt outside the church. A short church service followed where the White Rose Morris men danced, rushes were officially presented to Rev Ball and songs and poems from the period of the original festival were performed by the choir and the congregation.
