I was delighted to be asked to attend the Carol Service at St Bartholomew’s Church on Saturday. The short church service, with many of the local children, was all about light and what it meant to people. I was given a drink of sherry and a mince pie as a show of hospitality and all the children were given finger torches so that we could sing the last hymn by torch light – a wonderful service.
Following this we moved to the memorial gardens where DJ, Cllr Steve McCarley entertained the crowds prior to the lights switch on which was performed by Mark Shelton 2016 citizen of the year, along with the Deputy Mayor of Calderdale Cllr Geraldine Carter and myself. The road was closed for a short time so the children could get closer to the switch on.
Father Christmas did a roaring trade talking to the local children and dispensing free gifts and several local shops and the Parish Council offices opened specially for the event offering food and drinks and special Christmas gift ideas. Ripponden in Bloom had a hamper draw and bran tub for the children.
All in all a great evening – thank you to all who came along and supported us.
